Walking & Biking Audits

The Woodland Safe Routes to School Program needs your help! Come take a walk with us to help your kid’s school.

Our program is doing 1-hour walking and biking audits at elementary schools in the Woodland Joint Unified School District during this school year. We will host these audits in partnership with the schools, and we want parent participation as well. The goal is to evaluate the school and neighborhood to determine how well traffic flows around schools, and how easy or difficult it is to walk and bike to that school. After the audit, recommendations are made on how to make it safer and easier for kids to walk and bike, and also to reduce car traffic. Audits are most successful when a few parents are involved because parents have important ideas about what it’s like to get their children to school!

If you are a parent of an elementary student in the WJUSD, and are interested in joining us for an audit, please email Jonathan Bartlett at Jonathan.bartlett@yolocounty.org to get on the contact list. Audits will be scheduled from February – June 2017 at various schools and they usually occur right after drop-off or pick up times.

About Safe Routes To School

In 2013 the Community Health Branch was awarded a small grant to provide resources and materials to schools in the Woodland Joint Unified School District so that they could help promote walking, biking, scooting, and carpooling among students and families. In 2016 the branch received a Caltrans’ Active Transportation Program grant to help expand the program with the goal of increasing the number of elementary and middle school youth who walk and ride their bikes by 10% in a 2-year period.

Currently staff are working with schools and community partners to provide education, materials, technical assistance, and collaboration to help build the Safe Routes to School Program.

Transportation Map for Woodland:

In partnership with The Bike Campaign, the Woodland SRTS program is proud to share this new transportation map for the City of Woodland.  This map features information on bike routes, lighted cross walks, and safety tips for bikes and pedestrians. Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Curriculum for 4^th- 5^th Grade

Safe Routes to School curriculum around the region has been developed and we would like to share it with you! Lesson plans are available to assist school administrators, parents and educators support Safe Routes to School strategies and are designed as a supplemental resource for educators to encourage healthy and active lifestyle by walking and biking to and from school.
